Because you said so

 I was reading in the book of Luke the other day, and when I got to the story of the miraculous catch of fish in chapter 5, I caught myself smiling.   You know the story and probably the song.  It is in the beginning of Jesus ministry.  He is by the Sea of Galilee. The crowds are large and so He climbs into a fishing boat and instructs the fisherman to put the boat out into the water a ways.  He tells the fishermen to cast their nets on the right side of the boat.  They advise that they had worked hard all night and hadn't caught anything.  Then Simon says to Jesus, "But because you say so I will let down the nets".  Imagine their surprise and joy when their nets became so full of fish that they began to break---and then their boat was filled with so many fish that it began to sink--and not only their boat but the boat of their partners too!!!!! Incredible!!

I love this story.  I remember teaching it in children's Sunday school.  I was always impressed at what the Lord did!  Now as an adult Christian woman, I am even more in awe. The future apostles were blessed when they followed Jesus instructions.  On their own "they worked all night but they caught no fishes".   The fish weren't hiding, they weren't sleeping.  They were there for the same reason the net was let down on the other side---because He said so!

Our story is the same.  When we try to "do it on our own."  When we try to "bless ourselves"  we quickly discover that there are no fishes on that side of the boat.  BUT.....when we obey Him, when we follow His commands they blessings pile up so much that our boat can barely contain them. Because He said so..we should do so.

Ephesians 5:20 "Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us....."

The Third Verse

Delighting

When I think of King David, I always think, "man after God's own heart".  His Psalms are an ever-present reminder to praise God. So it is no surprise that in his writings, I find my favorite verse. Psalms 37:4 "Delight in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart. " When I found myself a young widow and single parent, the immediate need for a plan for the future for my children as well as myself, weighed on my heart.  All the previous plans had Eddy in them. So it was time to consider what I (and God), wanted..where we were going, what we'd be doing!  It started off as a daunting task! My mom was a faithful Christian who had to reexamine her hopes and dreams several times.  She always went to God's word for guidance. Reciprocal Delighting

Overwhelming gratitude sweeps over my soul every time I think about "delighting" in God!  Did you know that when we delight in the Lord, He delights in US?  So as I am striving to walk in His path, to meditate on His Word and to keep my eyes focused on Him AND when I try to remain pure, when I love others and share the good news about salvation, HE delights in Me?  That's what it says!  How blessed are we? According to the first chapter of Ephesians, it was His desire to create a people who would delight in Him. In his "commentary"  The Message, Eugene Peterson says "Long before he laid down earth's foundation, he had us in mind and settled on us as the focus of his love"   A couple of sentences later Mr. Peterson adds this parentheses "What pleasure he took planning this".   Don't you just love that?  Such a beautiful thought!
